Reflection and Self-Assessment

KNOWING ONESELF

Teenagers become more effective learners through reflection and self-assessment. Effective learners think about what they have learned and what it means to them. In fact, it seems that this is really what distinguishes effective learners from less effective ones. Effective learners are aware of a greater variety of thinking and problem-solving techniques and are able to reflect upon which ones work best for them and in what circumstances; they also know how to transfer these to other situations. This ability to examine the learning process provides these learners with a powerful tool for the consolidation and transfer of learning. Educational writers refer to this process of self-assessment, where learners can examine, summarize, synthesize, evaluate, and review their own learning, as reflection and metacognition. Caine and Caine (1997), in Education on the Edge of Possibility, conclude that true and long-lasting learning must involve “active processing” (p. 121) that allows “students to take charge of learning and the development of personal meanings” (p.122). This happens through “reflection and metacognitive activities” and “emphasizes self-reflection and deeper learning” (Caine & Caine, 1997, p. 122). Reflection and metacognition assist the brain in placing information into long-term memory.
